About Reading Practice

Reading Practice lessons contain high-interest, authentic informational texts — featuring videos, graphs, charts, and other visual sources —  that build up students’ discipline-specific background knowledge.

At the end of each Reading Practice lesson, students answer five multiple choice questions, which teachers can use to gauge comprehension. These questions also mirror the language and format of questions commonly found in state assessments.

All Reading Practice lessons are aligned to the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading. They can be assigned as independent or collaborative work, and are available to ThinkCERCA Basic and ThinkCERCA users. Reading Practice lessons are differentiated by grade bands (3-5, 6-8, 9-10, 11-12).

Reading Practice lessons were formerly known as “Additional Reading Practice.” The name was simplified to “Reading Practice” in July 2018.

Where to Find Reading Practice lessons

To find and assign Reading Practice lessons, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the Main Library page and from there you can find them:
   1. In writing modules
      1. Select a writing module from the lesson spotlight for ELA
         1. Or select a Content Area or Theme collection and then select a Writing Module
      2. On the Writing Module page, scroll to the bottom.
      3. Under "Suggested Pairings," you will see the names of Reading Practice lessons that pair with the Writing Module. (If you also see a prompt to "View All Grade Levels," select this text to see more Reading Practice lessons.)
   2. In the "ThinkCERCA" tab
      1. You will see an "Additional Reading Practice" row that will list the last updated lessons
         
      2. You can also click on "View All" to view and filter them all
   3. In the "Browse" tab
      1. You can choose "Reading Practice" under the "Type" filter
2. Select the name of a Reading Practice lesson to navigate to a page with details about the lesson. From there you can preview, bookmark, or assign the lesson.
