Set-Up ThinkCERCA's Safe Browser for Assessments

Understand the lockdown browser options for ThinkCERCA assessments.

If your district or school is administering professionally scored benchmark assessments, it is important to know your assessment window in advance and confirm which locked browser option is right for students’ devices. We recommend completing set-up at least one week before your assessment opening date.

ThinkCERCA supports two approaches depending on the devices in your building(s):

Option 1: Safe Exam Browser (SEB) for Windows, macOS, and iOS

For schools using Windows PCs, Macs, or iPads, ThinkCERCA integrates with Safe Exam Browser (SEB), a free application that turns a student device into a secure workstation. Once active, students are locked into ThinkCERCA. They cannot open other applications, switch tabs, take screenshots, or access outside websites. When a student submits their ThinkCERCA assignment, SEB closes automatically and ends the lockdown session.

To deploy, administrators or teachers download a .seb configuration file directly from ThinkCERCA and distribute it to students. Students double-click the file to launch the secured session. SEB must be installed on each device in advance. To set-up SEB for your school, full instructions are provided in our Help Center: https://help.thinkcerca.com/support/how-to-lock-down-the-browser-in-windows-macos-and-ios

Option 2: ChromeOS Kiosk Mode for Chromebooks

For schools using Chromebooks, ThinkCERCA can be configured to run as a managed kiosk app through the Google Admin console. When set up, Chromebooks boot directly into ThinkCERCA. There is no ChromeOS login screen, no shelf, and no address bar. Students sign-in with their existing ThinkCERCA credentials, and all standard ChromeOS shortcuts are disabled.

Set-up takes approximately 10 minutes per organizational unit and requires Google Workspace for Education admin access and enrolled ChromeOS devices. We also recommend disabling screenshots, printing, and external storage as part of the configuration.

To set-up ThinkCERCA Kiosk mode for your school, full instructions are provided in our Help Center: https://help.thinkcerca.com/support/how-can-i-set-chrome-os-kiosk-mode-for-locking-down-the-browser

With both options, students will log-in and use ThinkCERCA as they normally would.
